Are you and your family ready for school to start again? Thanks to the generosity of our donors and supporters, we are! We were able to help over 500 students in the neighborhood prepare for success as we distributed free care packages of school supplies at our 12th Annual Back to School Fair. How did we get so many? Irish Fest offered Hope House the opportunity to collect school supplies on the festival's opening night, where guests gave notebooks, folders, crayons--all sorts of great things--in lieu of admission. These donations filled a U-Haul truck, totaling at about $14,000. Can you imagine the mountains of pencils and markers?

To conquer these mountains, a group of fantastic volunteers from US Bank sorted, organized, and filled up school supply care packages. There's no way our Street Fair would have been possible without their help! It took hours of work and lots of helping hands, but they did it, and many, many young students were made very happy the following day at our Street Fair.

Hope House of Milwaukee will be hosting the 12th Annual Back to School Street Fair on August 18th from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Orchard Street, between 1st and 3rd Streets. This year, we will have resource tables, free school supplies, food, games, bicycle repairs, and art projects! Each year, we give out backpacks full of school supplies to hundreds of students in Milwaukee, for no cost at all.

In years past, we've offered free bike repairs:

Our Shining Stars, volunteers, and program staff have been preparing their garden for the summer. Youth will have the opportunity to work and play in the garden every week during the summer program--and will enjoy their work at harvest time! Youth have already been able to eat fresh strawberries and cilantro that they have carefully grown. Our Lead Youth Worker, Miss Beth, tells me that they have plans to make salsa once the tomatoes and peppers are ready!

To celebrate the garden and make any final preparations, the Shining Stars held their annual Planting Party for friends, family and volunteers. We had a fantastic time and learned a LOT from an amazing volunteer from the DNR--Tom. We tilled the dirt left dry from lack of rain, we planted so many different seeds, we learned what bugs live in our garden, and Tom helped us save some very weak tomato plants.

First, we had to clear out any last...

Our Shining Stars Youth have been working very hard the past couple of months, preparing for their second annual Youth Art Show, "All Around the World". Last Friday, the gallery opened at the Borg Ward Collective. We had a fantastic turnout with so many proud families, friends, staff and youth. The youth displayed their paintings, sculptures, photos, and other works--and sold quite a bit, too! Our Shining Stars got to experience something that many aspiring artists never get to--displaying their work in a gallery. We learned the whole process of organizing an art show, from top to bottom, as well as lessons in responsibility, leadership, and cooperative decision making. We hope that the youth will hold onto not only their creative skills, but these social and job skills into their adult life, and use them to pursue their grandest dreams. We hope you enjoy some photos from the show! You can view a larger collection on our Facebook page....

April is the month of city-wide spring cleaning in Milwaukee. We hosted two clean ups this month with local university students from UW Milwaukee and Marquette, as well as smaller clean ups at Block Watch meetings. Our volunteers tackled not only litter, but helped neighbors with larger items that would be pricey special pick up items otherwise. Dumpsters were provided--and quickly filled! Volunteers worked hard to beautify Walker's Point, Clock Tower Acres, as well as the neighborhood around our newest partnership with Mercy Housing Lakefront, the Johnston Center Residences on 13th and Windlake. We are incredibly grateful for all of the hard work and time donated to us this April!
